What Jiu-Jitsu Means To Me
I do Jiu-Jitsu because it makes me doubly strong in a mental and physical way. It helps me to overcome any fears of competing because I know I can finish strong and proud of what I did. I also will learn my weaknesses to get better at and as of what to take time on. Each day I roll against Brynn, Tanner, Raph, Anita or Hall. I feel confident in my strength, skill and size.
I think Jiu-Jitsu means to overcome, to strategize, to feel, to enjoy, to discipline yourself in ways to beat the opponent or just to teach the opponent how not to do and what do do. You teach yourself how to become disciplined, strong, and yet kind or aggressive to your opponent. You act like a teacher for the younger kid or beginners. You act like a soldier for the older, more advanced kids.
I have reached a level where I cannot stay. I feel that I want that Jr. Black Belt more than a Red Belt but not a White Belt because as a white belt you learn, enjoy, and absorb things like moves but as a Red Belt you are the one who is teaching, giving, old, and at the end of the absorbing process and in the giving process. You can always enjoy being a white belt.
I have shown my devotion to the sport by competing and one thing I have learned from competing is that if you lose don't cry just keep trying and sometimes the person who beat you was just the better grappler that day. The preparations you have to make have to be out of the ball park you have to go to the maximum and beyond in your practices and in your training to have a chance of getting a first place trophy or medal you can not just hope for the best, you really have to be the best in grappling. I have also shown my devotion to the sport by sticking to it, staying in the sport. Sometimes you don't want to go to Jiu-Jitsu but you have to get better and I have had my days where I do not want to come but I still do, even when I sprained my wrist or when I dislocated my thumb I still came and practiced. I just put tape around it and I have become a great person from doing Jiu-Jitsu. I have been able to beat people way bigger and stronger because my technique is so good. I like doing this sport because it shows you how to really defend yourself properly and effectively to truly protect yourself from bullies.
These are some techniques that I really like: the triangle and the heel pick. I like the triangle because I can finish anybody in it and it's easy to catch people in it because there are so many more places you can get people in than any other finish, I think. A triangle is where you put your leg on the back of their head and your other leg over your ankle then you squeeze your knees together and pull their head down only one arm should be in now. Push their arm over to the other side of your body so their arm is across their neck and make them tap. The heel pick is a take-down and I like it because it's easy to do on people and it is really effective. To do the heel pick you shoot in from standing and wrap your hand around the ankle with no thumbs, stand up completely and pull their ankle up to make them off balance and make them fall.
The armbar is a finish just like the triangle. The armbar can be from many positions just like the triangle. To do an armbar you must have one of the opponent's arms. You slide your knee up from their side to above their head. Then lift up their other arm and slide your ankle to their head and swing your left leg over their head. Sit back and bridge your hips. Make sure their thumb is pointing away from your body towards the sky. This next one is from the guard the last was from mount. To do this armbar you must be on the bottom of guard. The person's arms must be on your chest with your left hand grab their right wrist and the tricep with your right hand. Now, put your left foot in their right hip, push off and change your angle. Next, swing your left leg completely over their head and make sure their arm is straight and their thumb is pointing toward the sky.
In my five years of training I have been able to learn what being a Jr. Black Belt is. You have to compete, help others, lead the class and most importantly friendship with others. You can't be a Jr. Black Belt without support from your friends and family because then you can't feel happy about yourself and your performance in that tournament. When you compete you must learn how to deal with loss like not to cry, stomp off the mat or scream in agony. You also must be able to be a good winner not to scream, yell, and just to be a good sport and tell the other person great job. To lead the warm-ups is to be a leader to be loud. Helping others is a big thing you cannot just squish people you have to show them how to get out of a position or how to advance from that position. Being a leader is to have great technique and be a great example to others to follow and learn how to do things properly from you. I like leading because kids look up to me for advice or Keegan but I just like leading the class and hearing the yes sirs right after I give a command.
EBJJ Kids talk about the benefits of BJJ! - Jun 19, 2008 - 7:42pm

FIGHTING WITH THE HAMMER:
What Jiu-Jitsu Means to Me
“Sometimes you have to spend a long time being the nail before you can get to be the hammer.”
Recently, I’ve heard this quote said quite often during my Jiu-Jitsu classes by Professor Marshall. In stating and restating this idea to us, he is trying to emphasize how easy it is to feel discouraged by the fact that when you try hard at something, you still might not succeed. Throughout my six or so years of Jiu-Jitsu training, the most important thing I’ve learned is that when one feels as if they are not as good at something as someone else, or they are constantly losing to others, it does not mean that they have a good excuse to quit.
I’ve found that when I set out to do something on my own accord, the biggest challenge is to follow through with it. When I first started taking Jiu-Jitsu, before almost every class, my brother and I would beg and plead to our mother to let us quit. It wasn’t so much the fact that we didn’t like Jiu-Jitsu, but simply the fact that we could not wrap our adolescent young minds around such a large word as commitment. It was just no fun having to come to the mat three times a week simply to work hard at something. However, most kids have to be dragged to any extra-curricular activity they may be taking part in at a young age. The real test is when they get older. If they find that they truly loathe their activity after taking it for several years, I can say it’s probably best to move on.
When I got older – around twelve or thirteen years old – I realized that I honestly needed Jiu-Jitsu in my life. I went through a strange depression phase where I felt that Jiu-Jitsu was one of the only things in my life that I could hang on to – where I felt that it was something worth working hard for. So I did just that. I started working hard. Instead of simply coming to class and consuming oxygen like the other kids seemed to be at that time, I started taking Jiu-Jitsu very seriously. And suddenly, I began to realize the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu. I was getting stronger. I was becoming more confident. Things that I always knew could happen but never thought would happen to me began to take place. The transformation is clear: instead of beginning a take-down match by closing my eyes, sticking my head under, and hoping that my opponent would please find a way to flip me over quick, I now have many days when I can come in and take any one down in seconds flat.
But there’s the catch – the keyword: “I now have many days…” – but that does not mean all days. Besides the good days, I always have days that are there simply to remind that I have quite a great deal of things to learn before I can expect myself to have great days everyday. As far as great days go, those are there to remind me why I love Jiu-Jitsu: because it is rewarding when you work hard for something and then suddenly succeed.
This is why I can really relate to the metaphor of being the nail for a long time and finally getting a chance to be the hammer. Jiu-Jitsu has taught me that when one works to accomplish what they’ve set out for, they are rewarded. And I believe that this is a good incentive for me to try in everything I do.
Besides all of this, I’ve learned quite a few other surprising things about myself through my Jiu-Jitsu classes. When I was younger – still going through the “nail” phase – there were a lot more teenaged kids taking lessons with me. They always seemed to be strong and confident, and – what struck me the most – very obviously full of shining technique. Some of them were quite unenthusiastic to have to work with some so much younger than themselves as I was, however they all tried their hardest to teach me and explain to me the moves that they were making and techniques that they were using. It always made me feel good about myself – that I deserved to be taught by them and to be aware of what I was doing wrong. I appreciated their help more than they could have known.
At that point, I didn’t believe that I would ever reach that stage of wisdom – enough to teach another student – and if I had believed that, I wouldn’t have believed how fast the years would fly before I was at that stage. Recently, however, I’ve realized that – sure enough – that stage has come. The classes I take have become filled with more willing, younger students and less of the experienced, older students. Though I might have enjoyed spending more time working on my strength and endurance with people my age, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with some of the younger students in recent classes.
I honestly love teaching Jiu-Jitsu to the kids. I feel as if it is an opportunity to make a difference in their outlook on Jiu-Jitsu. I love the way that if it is taught correctly in a way that shows it’s art of the tactics in a good light, the child might actually see all the opportunities they have to learn in their future. They could be motivated to keep trying until they can get good – or until they can move into their “hammer” phase.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Boulder has made such a difference in my life ever since I started it. It’s given me something to cling to. Something to be proud of – not to mention the positive attention it brings me in school. I’ve realized recently that Jiu-Jitsu is a kind of family for me. It’s not the typical kind, but a family nonetheless. I can always come back to the people I’m familiar with, and simply learn something new. I can always take out my emotions – whether they be good or bad – on Jiu-Jitsu by working just that much harder.
Jiu-Jitsu…A Part of Me
By R. M. C. H.
Jiu-Jitsu has been a part of my life for a long time. I’ve been taking classes since I was six years old and I still love them. Although I’ve been through some rough patches, I can always think of Jiu-Jitsu and think of something positive. There are many things that Jiu-Jitsu means to me, but the main ones are discipline, exercise, and training, winning and losing, testing and promotions, the lessons I’m taught, the Jiu-Jitsu set of mind, a cool hobby, and self defense.
First, Jiu-Jitsu means discipline to me. When I began taking classes, I was very rude, impolite and had terrible posture. I’ve learned many things on manners and being respectful. And although my posture still is sometimes a little off, I can actually sit straight at the few fancy dinner parties I’ve had to attend recently. I now know when to hold back a joke or when to say “thank you.” I now have discipline that I didn’t have before I began taking Jiu-Jitsu.
Second, at Jiu-Jitsu, I get a lot of exercise. This is becoming more and more important for me because I am getting less and less at school. At Jiu-Jitsu, almost every time I go, when I leave I am sweaty and tired. Most people tell me that the more tired and sweaty you get, the more exercise you are getting. I’ve noticed that after I have a class I weigh less than before. This is why exercise is a large part of Jiu-Jitsu for me.
Training. It’s a huge part of Jiu-Jitsu. This ties in with exercise because when I train, I exercise a ton. When I train, I try to use the knowledge I have to fight. Sometimes I have tricks up my sleeve. Other times, I have no idea what I’m doing. Most of the time, I lose fights, but that’s okay because it toughens me and I learn how to win. If I’m working with new students or smaller kids, I sometimes try to help them out so they learn a little more. If I’m working with larger students, sometimes, I just hope I don’t break something. The problem is I get hurt a lot, but nowadays, I tough it out.
Jiu-Jitsu is all about winning and losing. When I win it feels great. When I lose, it sometimes does feel bad. But as Professor Marshall has said “Sometimes you have to spend a long time being the nail before you can get to be the hammer.” This quote rings out through my ears every time I lose. It helps me remember patience because I know that one day I will be the hammer. Losing isn’t terrible. It is a natural part of life; a learning experience. After all, if you keep learning, you’ll never make the same mistake twice…hopefully.
Another large part of this sport is testing and promotions. I have memories from about seven years ago when testing days were a day to impress the parents with what I learned. Every time I tested, I would always pass and receive a new belt. But with so many changes in the belt system since then, it’s taken me a long time to move up. Now, almost every test I pass and I get a stripe. It’s a far cry from years ago with a brand new belt with each test. Back then, tests were a huge deal. I would stress about them the night before, hoping I’d pass. Now, it seems a little laid back because I typically know the material like the back of my hand and it’s all review. Well, here I am finally at the end of the children’s belts and about to begin adults. Then it will be the same thing all over again only it will take much more than seven years. Much more.
I am taught many lessons at Jiu-Jitsu. Not just how to fight. Also things like good manners, controlling one’s emotions, and respect. Lessons like what to do when one gets lost in a grocery store, when someone is bullying me at school, and how to handle strangers. Things like healthy habits, responsibility, and where and when one can use Jiu-Jitsu. These lessons are important and without this school, I may have had to learn these lessons the hard way.
When I think of Jiu-Jitsu, I typically think of the set of mind it puts me into. In this complex sport, one needs to stay cool and calm. I try to use this principle in life. Be a rock, the kind you can sit on. Hard but comfortable…not too comfortable, though. It’s kind of like being a Samurai or Jedi Knight. It feels good.
Jiu-Jitsu is a pretty cool hobby for me. When people ask me what I like to do, I tell them “I like to do Jiu-Jitsu” and their eyes grow wide and they are intrigued to hear more. So I tell them the basics and they think that Jiu-Jitsu is pretty cool. I think so too. I think why I like it so much because for years I’ve been obsessed with Star Wars and Jedi Knights, and the Jedi are like the Jiu-Jitsu mind set.
“It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant.” This is what Wikipedia had to say on Jiu-Jitsu. I agree with that priciple. The key word in that sentence is defence. That’s what Jiu-Jitsu most importantly means to me. I’ve had to use it a few situations and has always helped me when I need it. It gives me self-confidence to know that I have a secret. That secret is, when I need to, I can Kick Butt!
All in all, I think my parents signing me up for Jiu-Jitsu was one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. I have lots of fun, learn a lot, and become a better person. My life would be very different without Jiu-Jitsu. It is a good place to escape school and homework, but I still learn a lot, and that’s what it’s all about.

Easton BJJ Womens Class!!!! - May 13, 2008 - 6:09pm
Hi Guys!!
I hope everyone is doing well! So, a lot of BJJ girls got together last Friday at the Boulder school and had a great time training, and it inspired me to organize a women's training session, even maybe just once a month, for all the women of the Easton BJJ team. It's fun to get the girls together from all our schools, and I know I felt inspired to train harder knowing there are other women out there doing the same thing.
I know you all are very busy, but would you mind sending me the names, email addresses and phone numbers of all 3 stripe white belt and above females at your schools? It's not urgent, so just when you have a free moment.
I appreciate it very much, and please let me know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions on this.
Thank you!

First off a huge congrats to Keegan and Casey for taking first place! Julia also did great with a second place, she gets my vote for most heart of the day, she really put it all out there and lost a very game fight on her third fight after a dominating performance in her first two. Ian Leiberman and James Strader-Smith both won their first two fights and lost their third, both put on a great show. Jessie Kim won his first and lost his second by points in a great match, more time and experience and I believe Jessie has the tools to be a champion.

The following story cortesy of www.mmajunkie.com, originally posted 02-18-08
Developing a game plan for the one of the world's toughest fighters - on a few weeks' notice - would be a challenge for any athlete. But trying to cut down to an extra weight class in the process could be called madness.
But that's exactly what Duane "Bang"Ludwig (16-7) is trying to do for his upcoming fight with former PRIDE lightweight champ Takanori Gomi (27-3).
The Ludwig-Gomi fight headlines the World Victory Road's debut show, which takes place Wednesday, March 5 at the National Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
The co main event bout takes place at 154 lbs.
"When I got the call, I was 183 lbs.," said Ludwig, a two-time UFC fighter. "I was supposed to fight Steve Berger (at a Strikeforce show) at 170 lbs., so I was trying to keep on some weight. The call came, so it was time to start dropping the weight."
WVR actually called up Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker to inquire about Ludwig for the fight, and once Ludwig got assurance that Berger wouldn't be left without an opponent, he accepted the fight.
However, will such a drastic, unexpected cut affect Ludwig's performance?
"Probably," Ludwig admitted. "But we'll see what happened. I couldn't pass up the fight because it's such a great opportunity."
A win over Gomi, arguably the world's top lightweight fighter, could be the biggest victory of of Ludwig's career, though a January 2003 first-round KO of Jens Pulver (when Pulver was in his absolute prime) is right up there.
So, how do you fight Gomi, a fighter who likes to stand and trade but is as equally dangerous with submissions?
"I'm just going to see where the fight goes," Ludwig said. "If I can get a submission, of course I'll take a submission. Ideally, though, I'd like to keep it on the feet and see what I can do there. But if I get cracked or don't have luck there, I'll be happy to take the fight to the ground. But it's MMA, so we'll just see what happens.
Good Luck Professor Ludwig!

Congratulations Professor Almeida! - Feb 4, 2008 - 8:41am
They say the battle is not truly won in the ring but in preparation on the mat before hand and with Master Renzo Gracie in his corner Professor Almeida showed in style why he is a champion. Thank you Professor for being a model of strength, fortitude and self control. Professor Almeida is one of the most controlled and self disciplined people I know and it showed Saturday night in his first round submission over Yundt. In honor of Professors win.... its time to once again shadow his model of perseverance and hit the mat (I'm sure he is doing the same thing). Many other great fights really showcasing the power of BJJ including submissions by Minotoro over Tim Sylvia, Marquart over Horn, (all of the above by guillotine) and Mir over Lesnar.
The most important kind of control is control of ones self!
Now go train!

Professor Almeida prepares for his return to the Octagon Saturday night!
I’m here in Las Vegas with Professor Almeida, Strength and conditioning coach Martin Rooney, Renzo Gracie, and the rest of the team in final preparation for the big fight. To see more about the fight Ricardo Almeida vs. Rob Yundt look on youtube for great videos of both of these fighters. Weigh ins are in a few hours and Professor is looking strong with very few pounds remaining to shed and I 100% believe he's going to disappoint a lot of Yundt fans this evening! With great guys like we have on our team, and a champions attitude like professor has, I believe we have a winning combination.
See you all on the mat!!!

Welcome Back! - Jan 28, 2008 - 3:10am
Dear students and freinds,
Hopefully everybody had a great holiday and is ready to get in full swing with their training. I expect this to be a big year for Easton BJJ with some great changes and additions. Master Renzo Gracie will be in his corner and its going to be war. So its another weekend in Vegas for me as I would not miss this one for the world! Professor Almeida is one of my top picks for the champ at 185 and I imagine were going to see why on Saturday night.
Also I am looking for accommodation's preferably in the boulder area for 4 special guests and friends of mine from 3/16 to 3/29. If anybody knows a rental situation or has any Ideas... it would be greatly appreciated, please contact me through boulder@eastonbjj.com or speak with me personally.

Two weeks to the new year. Make them count. - Dec 16, 2007 - 10:46pm
Life unfolds. Each and every day we awake to an opportunity for re-invention. The wonder of the whole adventure is that we get to do a ‘re-take’ on who we are, each and every day. We are not our past; the past is simply a name for the series of paths and choices we made to arrive here in the present. We ARE, exactly who we continue to CHOOSE to be.
A lot of people leap at the chance to make new years resolutions; this represents a chance to ‘start over’; a chance to re-define who they are and how they act in the world. To that, I ask this – WHY WAIT?
Professor Jon Will.
RIP Ryan Gracie - Dec 15, 2007 - 9:02pm

Ryan was often referred to as the most valiant of the Family and was seen as a fierce competitor and representative of Gracie Jiu-jitsu in Pride, ADCC, and BJJ mats around the world. Cachorrao signs UFC deal
Contract is good for six fights
On first hand for GRACIEMAG.com, Ricardo Almeida revealed that he has just signed a six fights contract with UFC. Cachorrao is considered one of the most talented fighters today. The comeback of Renzo Gracie’s black belt to MMA was scheduled to happen early this month at Cage Fury Fighting Championship, but the event never came through. Therefore, Cachorrao negotiated a deal with Dana White.
Before signing, Almeida looked into five different offers. His first bout should be scheduled for the beginning of 2008. “The final goal of my return was to get to the UFC, so I thought why not go straight there at once,” said Cachorrao to GRACIEMAG.com
The above news was taken from graciemag.com go there and subscribe for more up to date news!!!
I’m just returning from a great week of training in the city and would like to express my gratitude for being able to be part of such a great team, Renzo Gracie Team! To say the trip was inspirational would be an understatement. All of Master Renzo Gracies instructors are truly world class. I learned some great drills from Gregor Gracie, had a few classes with John D (unbelievable), and Daniel Gracie. Tough training with Gordinho, Igor, Fabio, Carl, too name a few! Got to see and work some techniques with Gene Dunn, Brian, and many more, not to mention Ze and Magno who obviously display passion and an in depth knowledge of their classes and BJJ in general. I had the fortune of seeing Matt Serra, Ray Longo, Luke Cumo, Pete Sell and more getting Matt ready for his big fight and it was nice not only too see what a great champion he is but to be reminded what a funny, and down to earth guy he has always been and remains. Professor Ricardo Almeida of coarse remains a champion on every level and I believe will be a truly dominant force in his weight as well. Martin Rooney ran a motivating fitness session for Professor Almeida and I that left my head spinning. So Really I just wanted to say thanks to master Renzo Gracie for always being who you are and creating such a powerful thing.
Looking forward to seeing everybody on the mat!!!

Fitness Quest (20's) - Oct 3, 2007 - 3:43pm
A minimum goal we would like to set for everyone is:
20 push ups
20 squats
4 pull ups
20 sit ups
One minute jump rope or quarter mile run
Each and every day. Sounds easy? Well it is, and that’s the point. If you can do more great, but don’t even think about skipping a day. Remember, even this small amount of exercise will improve not only your jiu-jitsu, but give you more energy throughout your day, improve your mood, and in general, give you a higher quality of life.
We have all started something cool (diet, health club, musical instrument, BJJ), did it religiously for two weeks, slacked off for one and lost it. Don’t let this happen to you! The first thirty days are what it really takes to form a habit, and then it’s going to become part of your lifestyle. You can split the work out in two and do 10, 10, 2, 10 in the am and then again in the pm but don’t go to sleep without doing it! Most of these are going to be satisfied the days you train.

Seminar and Graduation - Jun 20, 2007 - 11:27am
Profs. Amal Easton, Mark Johnson and Mario Correa as well as the legend Prof. Helio Soneca were present Friday evening at Tri-Town Jiu-jitsu to witness Coach Erwin Lopez be presented with his brown belt by Prof. Easton. Anyone who knows Erwin can attest to his abilities as a player and the loyalty his students have for him are a testament to his abilities as a teacher. Congratulations, Coach Lopez! It is well-deserved!
Saturday afternoon, students ranging from beginner to advanced from both Denver and Boulder academies gathered at the Boulder location for a seminar with Prof. Helio Soneca. The seminar was no-gi and covered a number of variations from the guard position. It's always a great opportunity when students can recieve instruction from such a seasoned and experienced black belt like Prof. Soneca.
Prof. Easton was keen to point out that when he began to train Jiu-jitsu as a white belt, Soneca was already a renowned black belt.
The seminar was a great success and we are all looking forward to Soneca's next visit to the academy. Those who were unable to attend were missed, and now we are going to tap you with all the cool stuff we learned!
Check out this video with Prof. Soneca and the new brown belt Coach Lopez:

or for Puerto Rican festival see
http://www.atasteofpuertoricofestival.com/
Its going to be a boxing event so unfortunately regulated by the Boxing commission, I say unfortunately because as they know nothing about Submission grappling they are forcing it to be a 3 rounds of 3 minutes. Chaun will be fighting Cody who lost to him by Rear Naked Choke in the finals of a recent tournament. Good luck Chaun and we’ll se you at the Puerto Rico festival! (please check back to the site so we can let you know after weigh ins if this match will actually happen if you are planning on attending).
